How might we enhance the Duolingo learning experience for current language learners, helping them improve conversational skills while gaining deeper cultural understanding, and ultimately boosting their overall language confidence?

Bridging the Gap in Language Learning: Turning Gamified Practice into Real-World Conversation

The Duolingo app is popular among language learners, with about 575 million dedicated users aiming to improve their language skills (Duolingo, 2022).

However, many Duolingo learners struggle to build real conversational confidence because the language practice is isolated and gamified. It causes learners to disengage or treat the app as entertainment rather than a language learning tool.

Conducting In-Depth User Interviews to Uncover Insights on Language Learning Journeys

To ground our research in real experiences, we conducted four remote, unmoderated user interviews with current and former Duolingo users. The goal was to understand how learners use Duolingo today and where they feel blocked in their language learning journey.

Language learners are motivated to start but struggle to build conversational confidence because practice is isolated, competitive, and culturally abstract. And it creates a gap between engagement and real-world fluency.

From User Insights to an MVP-Level Conversational Learning Feature

Over a six-week hackathon, our team translated user research and learning science insights into a focused, MVP-level feature prototype designed to bridge the gap between gamified practice and real-world language use. Drawing on patterns observed in conversational learning products, we project that introducing Duolingo Neighborhood could increase session completion and repeat engagement by approximately 15–25% compared to baseline usage.
If this concept were to move forward, the next phase would focus on rapid validation through A/B testing and concept refinement.
